Agriculture is the production of crops and the rearing of animals for human use as food. It is also called farming. Agriculture provides us with food, which is needed by us to live. Food provides us with energy and strength needed for work, motion and life. There are many types and kinds of food. These different types and kinds of food perform different functions in our body. Some repair damaged parts of our body, others protect the body from sickness(es)/ disease(s), etc. Examples of food are rice, maize, yam, plantain, fruits, vegetables, onions, mineral drinks/ beverages; water too is a very essential part of our food. All foods contain water and the body needs more water than food to be most strong and healthy. Of course, best/very clean (pure) drinkable water is much needed in our body.

Increase in food availability means a better and most successful economy.

Branches of Agriculture: 
1. Crop Production: This is concerned with the production of food and cash crops for consumption or export. Examples of food crops are rice , maize, yam, vegetables, etc.
2. Livestock Farming: This is the rearing of animals for consumption as food. Examples are cattle, sheep, goat, chickens, hens, etc.
3. Forestry: This is the art of planting trees, tending and managing forests.
4. Fish Farming: This is the rearing of fish species in scientifically controlled conditions in enclosed bodies of water such as ponds, streams, rivers, ocean, etc. Fishing provides food, employment, financial gain and foreign  exchange.

Types of Agriculture / Farming systems:
Peasant Farming: This is a type of farming whereby a person produces food for himself and his family alone.
Mechanized farming: This is the use of special machines like tractors, harvesters, etc. in farming. It is employed for the production of very huge amounts of food for sale and use by many people.
Plantation agriculture: This is the planting of economic crops on very large areas of land.
Co-operative farming: This is a type of farming in which farmers come together as a group in order to receive government assistance.

Importance of Agriculture:
Provision of food.
Provision of employment.
Provision of building materials, e.g. wood.
Provision of clothes e.g. cotton, fiber, hides, skins, etc.
Provision of raw materials for industries.
